Artist Spotlight: Justoid ( February 2022)

elissamwing

Justoid is a 22 year old artist from Aurora, Illinois. He grew up listening to his grandparents’ music, classics and some country, but always had a love for rap. Playing guitar and piano, Justoid already had a clear passion for music, but he didn’t begin to create his own until around his sophomore year of high school. He remembers making joke songs with his friends, and even performing some of them at the school’s open mics - until it got him suspended.

As Justoid and his friends got more into making music, they started incorporating different equipment and recording music for others to hear. Growing in success, he started to take it seriously, investing more into making a name for himself. Despite the time and effort he puts forth, Justoid doesn’t look at music as a career. He feels that when it starts being held to a certain standard, the joy can be taken out of it. He puts effort into learning many different skills, so that he never has to feel like his creative outlet has been compromised with the pressure of making it his sole job. Justoid notes that his biggest goal is to stay as real with people as possible, both in his music and in his interactions. He claims this is a trait he was inspired to pick up from XxxTentacion, seeing that being a real artist and not changing attitude with popularity is the best way to go about it.

Justoid finds that to be one of his strengths as a local artist. He hopes to send out a message in everything he does, and be as open as possible. However, he finds one thing that bothers him is the way people interpret those messages. Justoid talks about being a local artist and having people around him constantly trying to figure out who or what he’s talking about in his songs. “When you hear a song from a mainstream artist, you’re not trying to figure out who they’re talking about or what problems are going on in their life. You find a way to relate or you create your own movie in your head,” he states. Justoid’s goal with being open in his music is to be able to create a feeling people can identify with and appreciate rather than analyze.

Despite struggles growing up, always feeling like he had a target

on his back, Justoid wants to show that he has grown past that and is working to use it as fuel for his fire. He has no doubts that he has chosen the right path, and feels that his goals will never be met, as he will continue to strive for the next level. He says that the most important thing to remember is that things can always be worse, but you have to hit your low points to know how and when you’re at your highs.
